Proclaiming The Risen Lord

Lesson Topic: Called to Proclaim the Risen Lord

Luke 24:1-10; Acts 9:19-20, 26-28, 31

Background Scripture: Luke 24:1-12; Acts 9:1-31

Main Thought: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? (Luke 24:5, KJV)

Luke 24:1-10; Acts 9:19-20, 26-28, 31

Luke 24

 1.  Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

 2.  And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

 3.  And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

 4.  And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

 5.  And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

 6.  He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

 7.  Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

 8.  And they remembered his words,

 9.  And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

10.    It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

Acts 9

19.  And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.

20.    And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

26.  And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.

 27.  But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

28.    And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem.

31.    Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

Lesson Setting

One of the cornerstones of our faith is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our appreciation of the resurrection grows as our understanding of Jesus grows.

As a historian, Luke was careful to provide a precise and accurate record of what took place. As a doctor, he was able to describe a death that gave way to life.

Exposition

I.                   Jesus Christ Arose: Historical Fact (Luke 24:1-10)

The woman arrived at the tomb bringing the spices with which they intended to anoint Jesus’ body. They were prepared to deal with Jesus’ death. There was no anticipation of life among them, only the numbing reality of his death. They had not the faintest hope of finding a risen Lord.

The woman discovered that the stone had been rolled back from the tomb’s entrance, and instead of the dead body of Jesus, they found themselves in the presence of two angels. The angels’ garments glowed, but not nearly as much as the message they brought: “He is not here, but is risen” (v.6)

The angels gently reminded the woman of what they never should have forgotten: “Remember how he spoke unto you” (v.6) The Gospel is summarized in these three words: “He is risen!”

II.                Convalescence (Acts 9:19)

In this passage, Saul is recovering from his encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus. As he recuperated, Christ communicated with Saul indirectly through Ananias, who came and placed his hands on Saul. For the first time as a Christian believer, Saul heard himself addressed as “brother” (v.17).

Saul received not only renewed physical sight, but also spiritual insight. Saul also “received meat” (v.19). Saul received the Spirit in fullness and was baptized with water. God tended to both Saul’s spiritual and physical needs.

III.             Saul the Convert Preaches Christ the Son of God (Acts 9:20)

Straightway is a word implying instant obedience and urgent action and is used here in reference to Saul’s earliest preaching.

He did not pause, question, or delay while waiting for further instruction, but immediately started preaching the Good News about Christ in the synagogues. As Jesus spoke in the synagogues, so would Saul speak through the early years of his ministry.

It points to the characteristic that would mark all of his years of service for Christ. Saul had a right to speak, because he was learned in the Jewish Law. He preached to them from the Old Testament, which they revered, and which promised the Messiah.

IV.             His visit to Jerusalem and Return to Tarsus (Acts 9:26-28, 31)

Saul’s journey from Damascus to Jerusalem could not have been an easy one, as there were people waiting to kill him. In fact, he had to be smuggled out of the city before he arrived in Jerusalem (Acts 9:25). Those who sought to kill him watched for him at the gates day and night (v.24).

Once he reached Jerusalem, Saul tried to join the disciples, but they did not trust him. This is understandable since he was considered an enemy of Christ as “he that destroyed them which called on the name in Jerusalem” (v.21).

Barnabas had fellowship with Saul immediately after his conversion in Damascus and appealed to the disciples on Saul’s behalf. He witnessed on the encounter between Saul and Christ and told of a converted Saul, who boldly preached in the name of Christ in Damascus.

Lesson Summary

Today’s lesson focuses on two transforming events: Resurrection and Conversion. The resurrection of Christ is the foundation of Christian hope. The power of the resurrection changes lives and gives hope where there was none before.

What we need to know is that the Christ who has risen is preeminent. He made all things, He rules over all things, He is the Head of the church, and he will bring all things to a just and righteous conclusion.

The more we hear the empty tomb translated in such terms, the more we will be encouraged to live for Christ. Then we will be making a growing impact on the world around us for Jesus Christ.

Life Application for Discussion

  1. Most adults have difficulty believing in something they cannot comprehend.
  2. Many adults long for a message of hope.
  3. Many adults have concerns about the mysteries surrounding death and the afterlife.
  4. Some adults have experienced a profound personal transformation.

Questions on the Lesson

  1. How do you think Saul’s preaching in the synagogues affected his listeners?
  2. What ideas about Christ are essential for people to understand if they are to accept Jesus as their Savior?
  3. What are some of the false ideas you have heard about Christ? How do these make it more difficult for people to receive Jesus as their Savior?
  4. What is meant by a commitment to Christ as Savior?
