The One and Only Savior
John 14: 1 - 12; 1 Timothy 2: 5 - 6; 1 John 5: 6 - 12
OPEN
- I would like to begin by asking
all of you to answer this one: What kind of situation would cause you
to say, "Man, this is real living."?
DIG
- Let's read
through all three of today's passages out loud. As we do, I want you
to look for what these passages tell us about Jesus. When we are
finished reading, I would like for each one of you to share one if you
can find it.
- Let's start in John 14. What is
the general context of time here? Why would the disciples be troubled?
- When Jesus commands the disciples
not to let their hearts be troubled, is he commanding them to feel
a certain way? Can we command our feelings? Can we control our
feelings?
- How would you go about "not
letting your heart be troubled"?
- What is Jesus doing right now?
- Jesus says, "you know the way. . ." What is the way?
Suppose a friend were to stop you and say,
"Do you know the way to heaven?" What would you tell them?
Turn to the person next to you and explain it to them. Go ahead, take
three minutes.
- How many ways are there, according
to verse 6?
- Would you say God is a bit closed
minded?
- Look at verse 12. Have you done
anything greater than Jesus lately? What is the deal?
- Look at 1
Timothy 2:5 - 6. How is Jesus described in this passage?
- How many mediators are there?
- Turn to 1 John 5:6 - 12. What is
meant by water and blood?
- Where is eternal life found?
- What does the Bible mean when it
speaks of "believing"?
- What does it mean, "he who has the son has life"?
- What about the good old boys who
live good lives but don't have Jesus? What does this passage say about
them?
- Isn't this a bit narrow of God?
- I ask again, why did God only
provide one way? Why didn't he set it up where all the good people go
to heaven?
- John says that Jesus is life. How
has Jesus become life to you? In what ways could you say, "To me,
living is just being with Jesus."?
- Complete this sentence: "to
me, what is really great about being a Christian is. . ."
- Let's close in prayer thanking God
that through Jesus he has provided for us eternal life.
2. John 14:1-12
"Do
not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2In my Father's
house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going
there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also
may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am
going."
5Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you
are going, so how can we know the way?"
6Jesus answered, "I
am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me. 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father as
well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."
8Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that
will be enough for us."
9Jesus answered: "Don't
you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?
Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the
Father'? 10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the
Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is
the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me
when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least
believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12I tell you
the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He
will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
1 Tim. 2:5-6
For
there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ
Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all men--the testimony
given in its proper time.
1 John 5:6-12
This
is the one who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ. He did not come by
water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies,
because the Spirit is the truth. 7For there are three that
testify: 8the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are
in agreement. 9We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is
greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his
Son. 10Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony
in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a
liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his
Son. 11And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,
and this life is in his Son. 12He who has the Son has life; he
who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
3.
The passage deals with life.
4.
The last third of John is the last week' of Jesus' life.
5.
This is not all he is doing, he is also
interceding in our behalf. But, he is preparing a place for us.
6.
We will never learn to tell our stories until we tell our stories.
7.
This promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. In a very short time
after the birth of the church there were far more followers of Christ than
were when Jesus was on earth. The church overall has fed the poor, built
schools and seen people come to faith like never happened when Jesus was
alive.
8.
Many of your people read the Bible on a regular basis. They read these
passages and say, "Hmm, I wonder what that means." You need to
tell them. It is beyond the scoop of this work to explore these things, but
there are many good commentaries that do
9.
All they good people do go to heaven. Only thing is, there are no good
people, except those God makes good through the washing away of their sins
through Jesus' blood.
